MAKO & COTARO

ARTIST DUO / PAINTING

MAKO & COTARO is an artist duo exploring the fusion of Japanese tradition and contemporary KAWAII culture. Initially focused on client work, they continually reflected on the question: “For whom do we create art?” Their participation in the social contribution initiative, BACK WALL PROJECT, marked a turning point—deepening their commitment to creating art that gives back to society.

They have since contributed to a wide range of projects, including artwork for the UNHCR World Refugee Day Charity Auction, poster design for Daikanyama Tsutaya Books, exhibitions at department stores, family-oriented art initiatives, and livery design for Porsche Carrera Cup Japan race cars.

Previously, they led a character project that attracted over two million followers, and they continue to engage audiences in Japan and abroad through social media.

Looking ahead, they aim to expand their “NEW KAWAII” movement through charity, custom commissions, and creative collaborations. Their work with BINGO includes cover art for BINGO Magazine and original T-shirt designs—each piece capturing and expressing the spirit of BINGO.

It is evident that the work of MAKO & COTARO fuses the elegance of traditional Japanese art with vibrant colors and contemporary character design. Their signature style balances tradition with freshness, offering gentle yet sophisticated visuals that resonate with audiences in Japan and abroad. Through bold reinterpretations of classical motifs and compositions, they invite viewers to rediscover the essence of Japanese beauty in the modern era.
